Nahid Rana has been fined 25% of his match fees for a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the ongoing first Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet.
The incident is related to an event that took place on Day 1. On the fifth ball of the 27th over of the Irish innings, Nahid fielded the ball while in his follow-through and proceeded to throw it inappropriately at No. 3 batter Cade Carmichael. The ball hit him on the pads. However, Carmichael had not moved out of his crease and the action taken by Nahid seemed to be out of frustration.
The right-arm pacer was found guilty of violating Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The clause refers to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”
As a result, one demerit point has been added to the 23-year-old’s disciplinary record, making it his first offence in a 24-month period.
There was no need of a formal hearing since the fast bowler had accepted the sanction by match referee Andy Pycroft. The official charge was levelled by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sam Nogajski, third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire Tanvir Ahmed.
For the unversed, Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand. The maximum limit is a 50% fine of the player’s match fee in addition to one/two demerit points.
At Stumps on Day 2, Bangladesh lead by 52 runs with Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Mominul Haque unbeaten on 169 off 283 and 80 off 124. Shadman Islam (80 off 104) was the only batter to get dismissed.
Speaking of Nahid’s performance in the match, his one and only wicket came in the form of Paul Stirling. Stirling, who was dismissed after scoring 60 off 76, ended up as Ireland’s top-scorer, as the tourists were bowled out for 286 in 92.2 overs.
