West Indies won the rain-curtailed second ODI against Pakistan at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, on Monday, August 11, by five wickets by the DLS method. This win helped the Caribbean side draw level in the three-match series after they had lost the first ODI at the same venue by five wickets.
Shai Hope won the toss on Monday and opted to field first. Saim Ayub got off to a decent start but was dismissed by Jayden Seales for a 31-ball 23. The West Indies pacer built on that dismissal and got the better of Babar Azam later in the same over. The talismanic batter departed for a three-ball duck.
After the two setbacks inside the first powerplay, Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan played watchfully, looking to resurrect the innings. However, Shafique couldn’t capitalise on his start, as he was dismissed for a 40-ball 26 by Jediah Blades.
Rizwan struggled to rotate strike and eventually lost his wicket against Gudakesh Motie, scoring 16 off 38 balls. The Pakistan innings was marred by rain. The first stoppage came after the 16th over, but no overs were lost. However, when rain returned in the middle of the 34th over, the game had to be shortened. The Umpires informed that the match will be 40 overs per side.
However, after the 37th over, there was another rain interruption, and the Pakistan innings came to a close. They had gotten themselves to 171/7 after Hasan Nawaz remained unbeaten on 36 off 30 deliveries. Seales was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 3/23 in seven overs.
Hasan Ali strikes twice with the new ball, but West Indies recover
The West Indies were given a revised target of 181 in 35 overs. Pakistan needed wickets with the new ball, and Hasan Ali delivered. The veteran seamer bagged two wickets inside the first four overs as West Indies lost both their openers.
Keacy Carty and Shai Hope steadied the ship with a 36-run partnership off 57 balls before the former was dismissed by Abrar Ahmed. Ali bowled just three overs with the new ball, and it seemed to be a strange move as he was looking in fine rhythm.
Sherfane Rutherford walked out to bat at No. 5 and went all guns blazing. Hope also batted proactively as the duo forged a 54-run stand off just 40 balls to calm the nerves of the home fans. However, Hope and Rutherford departed in quick succession after scoring 32 (35) and 45 (33), respectively.
Roston Chase and Justin Greaves joined forces and took their team home in 33.2 overs. While Chase remained unbeaten on 49 off 47 balls, Greaves reached 26 from 31 deliveries. Their unbeaten partnership yielded 77 runs off 72 balls.
