Former India pacer Yograj Singh heaped praise on Mohammed Siraj for his exemplary display of fast bowling on the tour of England, especially on the final day of the fifth Test, as his enthralling five-for helped India level the series.
Siraj finished the five-match series as the highest wicket-taker. He bagged 23 wickets from five matches at an average of 32.43 and a strike rate of 48.39. The Hyderabad pacer has been lauded for his grit and determination for the country as he bowled more overs than any other bowler in the series.
Apart from applauding Siraj’s efforts and comparing him to the legendary Kapil Dev, Yograj commended Shubman Gill and said that it didn’t seem like he was captaining the Test team for the first time.
“The way our players have played, it was amazing to watch. The way Mohammed Siraj bowled, he reminded me of Kapil Dev. The captaincy of Shubman Gill was mature. It did not seem at all that he was a captain for the first time,” Yograj was quoted as saying by MSN.
India started the series with a five-wicket defeat at Headingley. However, they bounced back strongly to register a first-ever Test win at Edgbaston in the second game. The Three Lions restored their lead in the third Test at Lord’s in what turned out to be a humdinger of a contest. India showed a lot of guts in the fourth Test at Old Trafford and batted for more than five sessions to avoid a defeat. The fifth and final Test at The Oval was the most closely-contested affair, where the tourists won by six runs.
Shubman finished as the highest run-scorer in the series. In 10 innings, he amassed 754 runs at an average of 75.40. He slammed four centuries, including a double century in the second Test. The Punjab batter shared the Player of the Series award with Harry Brook, who also had a phenomenal series, smashing 481 runs at 53.44.
